Vents

Hi,

Ive got to replace the ventilators (are they called "Dorade" vents??) on the cabin roof, the current plastic mushroom type ones are broken & one of them leaks,
Are these ones http://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemd ... lutePage=2 any good, i have 2 of them, but dont want to install them if they are ineffective!.
Which ones work for you?

I was also thinking of installing the vent above the stove area, facing towards the stern, so the cooking fumes are drawn up & out the vent by the passing breeze??, good idea or a disaster ?

Tales has the exact same units and they work well. I fitted them 5 years ago and they are getting a bit scruffy now but very cheap to replace!

Hi

The cook complained of heat and claustrophobia so I put a 40x15cm opening hatch in the middle of the coach roof more or less where you stand to cook.

It's great for additional natural light dispersing heat and passing snacks to those above.

Key advice I got from an expert is to keep fairly small and to have rounded corners.

I can post a picture if I can work out how!

It's got a hydraulic ram to keep it up, but you can set it at any opening, and it can be latched either fully closed, or just ajar. We leave it just ajar when on the mooring for weeks on end and no water gets through. Dimensions are about 25cm square and it's right above the sink.

G'Day all,
I am up to the same point as Shaun, where I need to replace the vents on Felicite. I was going to use the Bias ones (its the nearest shop to us). They are similar the Whitworths ones. I noticed on Rob Lovelaces boat, in his adventurous video "Philip Island Solo Circumnavigation" that he used a rear facing horn type.
What is best and what gets fouled with halyards etc, I'd appreciate any reports. At this stage I'd go with the stainless ones if they are a close fit to the existing ones.
After all, its a Top Hat and only the best will do.

I replaced the fairly useless UFO vent above the head with a solar vent (stainless steel model) . It's brilliant. Gets rid of odours fast and always leaves the head fresh when the boat is closed up.

I bought the day and night model off Ebay for around half the Whitworths catalogue price for the Sunvent model. However, I think that the more expensive Nicro vent that Whitworths sell may include a screw-in plate to seal the vent in rough weather. This would be a good idea but I figure that short of a complete roll over a bit of water sloshing into the head is no big problem.

I have also bought a stainless steel mushroom vent to be installed above the stove. Generally I don't like mushroom vents but as I use the stove in winter to heat the cabin I wanted something I could close easily to avoid heat loss.

G`day Shaun,
If you paddle across to Aeolian I have a stainless solar vent waiting to be fitted you can check out.

It will replace a mushroom vent so hole will need to be enlarged.

Any advice on best method to cut hole through deck and inner skin (Mk2) will be appreciated from any member.

G'Day all,'well I eventually got around to replacing the standard stainless dome vent with the model shown in the photos. Seems to work well. The advantage is that you can swing the galley vent forward and the dunny vent backward to get cross ventilation.
I hope I didn;t replace the vents too soon. I think they were past their "use by date".
