Anyone thought about, or tried this?
Maybe with long oars 10-12ft long, facing forwards(fisherman style) standing in the cockpit, tiller between your knees....

Got my inboard diesel running the other weekend for the first time , but not supremely confident about it yet , rowing could be a back-up alternative, if wind dies & so does engine couple of miles from port.

yeah I've thought of this, you can use the oar for a emergency rudder and a fender board when tied to a pier. but as yet I haven't tried it. Tell me how you go.

The boat Yop HNat Mk III "Sea Monkey' which used to be "Everon" has oars.

The current and previous owners bought them with the oars there.
(I used to know the previous owners. As far as I know they have never been used.)

I know she has a lot of storage on board, but I have never seen a pair of oars except for the pair I bought for the tender. Having said that, after 10 months of ownership, I am still finding things on board that I didn't know about!!!

They are the 2 very long poles that may look a bit like spinnaker poles that (were) stored vertically lashed to the stays. One on each side.

I never saw them used.

Aah, yes, they are spinnaker poles. I could tell they had not been used much. I have replaced the uphaul on each pole, and also the plunger lines as they were either very old or non-existent.

I reckon they could be used as oars if required, I had never thought of that.

OK, so who is going to do it then, and post video of it working.

I spoke to an old salty years ago who reckoned you could move any boat by sculling, and that it was all in the technique etc. I have always been curious but never taken it a step further would certainly be an interesting exercise...

Probably easiest done with the motor ticking over - ha ha.

I'll chuck it on the end of my list (dont hold your breath!), i'll keep my eye open for a decent stick of 80x80 or similar timber.

On the jester site there's a photo of Roger Taylor on his 21ft Coribee "MingMing" with two long oars along the front deck, overhanging to make a bowsprit.
